The great outdoors were not-so-great this week, but now that our various parts and pieces have finally thawed out, we’re ready to load up on a little Vitamin D with a walk around White Rock Lake.
Or a little light kayaking if we’re feeling adventurous.
And when we’re done, we’ll head right to brunch at the newly opened White Rock Alehouse & Brewery, a fantastic new spot with access to the trails around the lake.
The brunch menu features some super-tasty and unique items, starting with the complex Merry Mary (also one of our high school nicknames). This riff on a traditional Bloody Mary brings together Tito’s Vodka, Zing Zang, Clamato, chipotle purée, Worcestershire, angostura bitters, celery and citrus zest. Or if you prefer, they’ll make you a straightforward version, too.
Then get ready for some tough decisions. Everything in the food section of the menu tempts hard, but don’t worry, most are built for sharing to get the biggest variety.
Sure-things include the Crab Kegs & Eggs, which feature the same crab-filled tater tots you can get any time of day, but have a Benedict-style twist thrown in with hollandaise sauce, asparagus and an egg; the Morning Glory sandwich, with blueberry pancake “buns,” sausage, egg and goat cheese; and the Wake & Bake flatbread built with two kinds of cheese, zucchini, crumbled sausage, caramelized onions, Texas honey, fresh jalapeños, arugula and a fried egg.
Best of all, even if you don’t go to White Rock Lake before brunch, the easy access to the trails makes it easy to work off all those calories.
