At this weekend’s star-studded Black Tie Dinner, Olympic icon Greg Louganis officially announced that Dallas is in the running to host the 2022 Gay Games. He was here to accept the gala’s Elizabeth Birch Equality Award and tied the announcement to his own story of coming out and competing for the first time as an openly gay man at the 1994 Gay Games in New York.
Hosted every four years, the Gay Games most recently took place in 2014 in Cleveland. Paris will host in 2018. Since its launch in 1982, the Games have been hosted in San Francisco, Vancouver, New York, Amsterdam, Sydney, Chicago, Cologne and Cleveland.
The short-list of host city contenders for 2022 is expected to come in February 2017. According to Wikipedia, Austin is also an official contender. Either Texas city would mark the Gay Games first time in a southern US city.
Let’s just hope they don’t pick an August date in Texas!
