HBO Takes On Netflix and Starts New Stand-Alone Service

Whether you loved True Blood or are an in-the-closet Game of Thrones fan, HBO is one of the world’s most favorite network channels. Some of the best documentaries, movies and TV series belong to HBO. In a surprise event yesterday, HBO announced that they will finally launch a stand-alone internet streaming service (HBO Go) to compete with Netflix and Hulu. If you’re a “cord cutter” then this is great news!

Instead of paying a pricey cable bill, “you’ll finally be able to watch HBO on the web without a cable subscription. In a dream come true for cord cutters, HBO CEO Richard Plepler has confirmed the company plans to launch a ‘standalone, over-the-top’ HBO Go subscription offering at some point in 2015,” reports The Verge.

According to HBO, there are over 80 million households who do not have HBO, so the move to offer it as a standalone streaming service makes sense. It will also have a direct impact on other popular streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

So this begs the question, would you be willing to cut the cable cord if more networks offered this type of service?
